Full service kitchen design and remodeling
U-shaped kitchen remodeling is ideal for large kitchen spaces. It can run along two or three walls of your kitchen. The arrangement of the countertop, major appliances, and floor storage units make up the U shape.
If your kitchen space is surrounded by walls and has one window, you can place the sink beneath the window. If you have a larger space, having 6 feet between the facing aisles would allow plenty of space for two cooks in the kitchen. There should be at least 42 - 48 inches between the facing aisles of your u-shaped kitchen.
One tail of your U-shaped kitchen can be a peninsula. The peninsula can be single, 1½, or double-width. A double-width peninsula adds seating to your kitchen if you want it. For more storage, you can hang cabinets from the ceiling over the peninsula, but we usually recommend not doing so and keeping your space more open.
When choosing the right kitchen design to remodel your space, homeowners often find themselves trading off counter space for storage. A U-shaped kitchen design with shorter tails can be built into an alcove of your home.
If you're short on storage space, you can use one of the tails of the U for three-quarter or full-height kitchen cabinets.
Depending on the way you choose to remodel your kitchen, there can be a lot of benefits to having a U-shaped kitchen design in your home.
One of the more affordable kitchen layouts, this provides multiple work zones for preparing meals.
A U-shaped kitchen design provides an efficient running kitchen, creating a slight separation from other parts of your home when using 3 walls or hanging cabinets from the ceiling to create the illusion of a third wall.
The two corners of the U allow for increased counter space for storing appliances. A U-shaped kitchen creates a perfect work triangle allowing you to easily move between the sink, refrigerator, and stove.
Adding benches to a longer U tail creates additional seating space for your kitchen.
A U-shaped kitchen design is customizable, suiting smaller families by creating shorter U tails or accommodating larger families by making the U wider and creating longer U tails.
A disadvantage to remodeling your kitchen in a U-shaped design is cost. Filling the large space with extra cabinets, countertops and appliances require more materials and labor than other designs.
Installing benches and cupboards on all three sides of the kitchen wall reduces the floor area, and can make the kitchen feel enclosed.
