Some people might think that kitchen design ideas are all about new technology and cutting-edge ideas. Sometimes it's just about using time-proven and efficient standbys. What are some "must have" products or designs for your dream kitchen?
A Walk-In Pantry is a great way to add some extra space to your kitchen. The cool thing about walk-in pantries is they can be built with shelves, drawers, and even a small countertop. This is a nice place to keep all of those items you either don't want out on your kitchen counter or items you only use once in a while, such as mason jars for dry goods, a built-in shelf for cookbooks, shelving for China or seldom-used platters and plates -- even small appliances! Most people choose the walk-in option rather than just opening a door because it enables a lot more space.
While a kitchen sink alone is a necessity, perhaps you have come across instances when you wished you had an additional prep sink in your kitchen for your fruit and veggies. Another great water feature to add to your dream kitchen is a pot filler above your range. This allows you to fill pots you're cooking in with ease, without having to travel far with a now heavy pot full of water. Instant hot or cold water dispensers are a great way to have hot water for coffee or tea, or a cold glass of filtered water to drink (see below). Adding these water features into your vault of kitchen design ideas makes your cooking prep extra functional.
Outlets have been around since the early 1900s, but they have gone through a few changes over the years. While you may have several outlets in your kitchen, they can be, a little less than aesthetically pleasing. Other ideas include:
- Pop Up Outlets - These pop up from your counter when you want to use them and pop down flush against the counter when not in use.
- Under Cabinet Strips - These strips are placed underneath the counters or cabinets and are pretty invisible if you don't know they are there!
- Wall Outlets - These hidden outlets go into the wall like a conventional outlet, but there is either a push or a slide mechanism that hides the outlet.
This might not be one of the kitchen design ideas you've thought of, but it's actually pretty ingenious. This built in pull-out drawer holds a laundry bag where you can throw dirty towels, dirty oven mitts, and dirty dish towels for later laundering.
Whether you plan to only make a few meals in your kitchen or you plan to use it every night to cook meals for your family, have dinner parties or holiday family get-togethers - lighting is a feature that really matters! Not only is light functional to help you see better while in the kitchen, but the right lighting can also add ambiance. A few lighting kitchen design ideas include:
- Pendant Lighting above the island
- Under Island Lighting
- Under Cabinet Lighting
- Recessed lighting in the ceiling
Depending on what you plan to use the kitchen for, different materials will work better with your lifestyle. If you want something ultra lush but don't plan on cooking a lot in the kitchen, marble may be a good option for you. On the other hand, if you plan on cooking a lot and you need a material that is maintenance friendly, durable, attractive, and can withstand hot dishes or wear and tear - granite or quartz are the best options.
